“We live in a changing world. Ageing societies and climate change affect our health now and tomorrow. The pandemic shows how important epidemiology is. My vision is to understand and mitigate the burden of disease based on cohort studies.”
Annette Peters heads the Institute of Epidemiology at Helmholtz Munich and is Professor of Epidemiology at LMU Munich. She has done pioneering work in researching the link between particulate matter pollution and cardiovascular disease. Today, Dr Peters heads the population-based KORA cohort, which was established in Augsburg in the mid-1980s, and is the principal investigator of the German National Cohort, where she is responsible for setting up the central biobank. Her research interests focus on age-related and chronic diseases. In particular, she strives to improve understanding of the role of environmental factors in the development of diseases by integrating lifestyle factors, molecular and imaging markers in times of climate change.
